In traditional Chinese medicine, it is believed that ill health arises when there are disruptions to the balance or flow of qi (life force) in the body. This can be due to both internal and external factors, and can manifest with a huge variety of symptoms from pain, to rashes to low feelings.

Acupuncture seeks to restore the balance and flow of qi by inserting fine needles into specific points in the body. The treatment is holistic encompassing the physical, mental and emotional aspects of a person, and each session is tailored to suit the individual.

What to expect

Your acupuncturist will begin by taking a full medical history, including details about your lifestyle. They will also examine your tongue and take your pulse. If necessary they may also examine your body.

During treatment very thin, sterile single-use needles are inserted into specific points on your body. Loose clothing is appropriate to enable the acupuncturist to access the points. The needles remain in place for 20-30 minutes during which time you are able to relax. Cupping and moxibustion may also be used.

Initial consultations last for 75 mins with follow-up consultations lasting for 55 min. Each treatment costs £50 *

*discounts are available for block bookings, patients, staff and volunteers at St Josephs.
